A new Captain Kirk card has been revealed for the Magic: The Gathering crossover set with Star Trek ahead of its November 13 release, with William Shatner on board to react to his tabletop depiction.
Magic: The Gathering has crossed over with a number of franchises, and while some of the best-known are close to the source material in terms of genre, like Final Fantasy and The Lord of the Rings, there have also been several sci-fi crossovers. In recent years, Magic: The Gathering has crossed over with Doctor Who, Fallout, and Warhammer 40,000, proving there's plenty of room for rayguns and aliens in its multiverse.
William Shatner Reacts to New Captain Kirk Card
The Star Trek set is due to launch on November 13, and the main Captains of the franchise are all appearing in Magic: The Gathering as cards, with the ability to function as Commanders. Naturally, Captain James T. Kirk is part of the set, and one of the special art treatments has been revealed in a video on the Magic: The Gathering YouTube channel, with William Shatner reacting to his depiction with his usual curt response.
Shatner has a more direct role in the Magic: The Gathering set than just appearing as a creature. The Star Trek set has seven Headliner cards which are signed by actors from the show, including William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan, LeVar Burton, and Ethan Peck. While these cards have signatures, they don't have their rule boxes, so they're more for collectors than for play.

Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Set Launches On November 13
The Star Trek set features characters from the entire history of the franchise, starting with Captain Kirk and the original Enterprise, to the incredible '90s trio of shows, and everything since. Players have the opportunity to build decks using characters from the entire series, though they'll work better if they're part of shared factions, which is the approach taken with the Commander Decks, where the Federation face off against Borg and Klingons.
In the case of the Captain Kirk card, he's able to summon red 1/1 Officer creature tokens, meaning he's spawning his own redshirts to die for the Federation, which is the most accurate way to do him justice in tabletop form. The only difference is that these redshirts will be killed by Serra Angels and the Tarmogoyf, rather than the Romulans.
