Latest Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana Introduces Playable Mind

Wizards of the Coast has dropped new Dungeons & Dragons playtest material. The new Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana has new subclasses focused on beings and organizations deep beneath the earth, as well as a new villainous path for those who wish to become Mind Flayers.

The Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana

Like all prior playtest material drops, the Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana is available to download for free on D&D Beyond. The material contains three new character subclasses, all themed around the Underdark of the Forgotten Realms. A cavernous subterranean region home to dangerous sentient fungal colonies, bioluminescent plants, and the conspiratorial Lolthsworn Drow houses.

The first subclass is the Barbarian Path of the Unlight. Barbarians with the subclass have been infected with the titular Unlight of Deep Imaskar, causing them to glow brightly when channeling their rage. But the Unlight is infectious and can have dangerous effects to those around them. Early-game features include dealing small amounts of radiant damage to any creature that successfully hits you and gaining Blindsight while raging.

The late-game effects of this subclass lean more into the infection angle of Unlight. Infecting targets, causing them to shed light and take radiant damage. The endgame ability even allows you to unleash a powerful blinding flash in a radius.

The second subclass in the Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana is the House Agent Rogue. This subclass leans into the social maneuvering and backstabbing of the Drow houses of Menzoberranzan. This means getting extra spells like Friends Suggestion, the ability to influence targets with a Bonus Action, and the ability to easily backstab your friends.

The third and final subclass is the Imaskarcanist Wizard. This subclass is for scholars who have dedicated their lives to uncovering the ancient secrets of the Underdark. Those secrets include utilizing the Unlight in their very spells. Notable class features include changing spell damage to Radiant, spending hit dice to heal allies, and turning enemies into glowing radiant bombs.

But the biggest draw of the Dungeons & Dragons Underdark Unearthed Arcana is the Path of Ceremorphosis villainous path. This new villainous option takes heavy inspiration from the inciting incident of Baldur's Gate 3. Your character is infected with a Mind Flayer tadpole and, as you progress through the path's Feats, you slowly gain psionic powers and squidlike abilities. But your free will is slowly subsumed by an Elder Brain.
