Girlypop Tabletop was different.
Their booth looked almost nothing like the traditional image of Dungeons & Dragons. There were flowers hanging overhead, pastel pink displays, character sheets covered in dragons and mushrooms, ornate dice boxes, jewelry and, sitting among all of it, a set of dice stored inside what looked like a stick of butter.

I needed to know more.
AdvertisementBut what initially caught my attention because it looked different became considerably more interesting once I understood what Girlypop Tabletop was trying to do. This is a company founded by women who wanted tabletop accessories that reflected styles they weren’t finding elsewhere in the hobby.
As a dad with three girls, that idea immediately connected with me.
I love tabletop gaming, and naturally I want to share that hobby with my daughters. But there’s no reason their version of fantasy needs to look like mine.
AdvertisementDungeons & Dragons has spent decades wrapped in dragons, warriors, dark forests, leather-bound books and enough skulls to make you wonder about the fantasy world’s burial practices. There’s nothing wrong with any of that. I love plenty of it.
Girlypop isn’t trying to replace that version of fantasy. It’s making room beside it.
Pink dragons count. Flowers count. Fairies count. Cottagecore counts. Apparently, butter counts too.
AdvertisementMy daughters don’t need pink dice to enjoy Dungeons & Dragons. They don’t need flowers, fairies or adorable sleeping dragons either.
But if those things make one of them look at my tabletop hobby and think, that looks like it’s for me too, then they matter.
That’s what I think Girlypop Tabletop gets right. It isn’t changing what tabletop gaming is. It’s expanding what tabletop gaming can look like.
